The union movement
The Australian Labor Party (ALP) was formed by the labour movement in the 1890s as the political wing of the movement, with a goal to elect Members to Parliament who would represent the interests of working people. Trade union members were largely responsible for the formation of Labor Party policy and setting in place an organisation capable of winning elections.
