A proud history delivering for Victorians.

For more than a century, Victorian Labor has stood for fairness, opportunity and dignity at work.

Born from the trade union movement in the late nineteenth century, Victorian Labor was founded on a simple belief: that governments should work for working people, not the powerful few. From safer workplaces and free public education to Medicare and modern public transport, Labor governments have helped shape Victoria.

Founded by working people, for working people

The Labor Party emerged during the 1890s in Queensland, as workers organised to improve wages, safety and conditions during a period of rapid industrial change. When Australia federated in 1901, we became the Australian Labor Party, and the Victorian Branch was formed.

Victorian Labor’s roots in collective action and social justice have never changed. They continue to guide our priorities today: secure jobs, strong public services and a fair go for every Victorian.

Throughout the twentieth century, Labor governments played a central role in building the institutions Victorians rely on every day. Labor backed free and compulsory public education, expanded TAFE and skills training, strengthened public hospitals, and championed public utilities and infrastructure that supported growth and opportunity.

Whether in government or opposition, Labor was often the driving force behind reforms that lifted living standards and widened opportunity, particularly for women, migrants and working families.

A record of reform and delivery

Victorian Labor has helped guide the state through significant economic and social change. Labor also championed equality by advancing reforms in gender equity, anti-discrimination law and multicultural inclusion. These reforms reflect a core belief that a strong economy and a fair society go hand-in-hand, and that growth should benefit everyone.

Since returning to government in 2014, Victorian Labor has delivered by backing major reforms with real investment and getting projects built.

A party that reflects Victoria

Victoria is diverse, dynamic and always changing, and so is our party. Victorian Labor represents workers and small business owners, families and retirees, students and carers, and communities across the suburbs, regions and inner cities. Our MPs, members and supporters reflect the people they represent.

Victorian Labor remains a genuine labour party. Trade unions are an integral part of our structure, reflecting our origins and our ongoing commitment to working people. Our values are grounded in the lived experience of workers and communities.

We believe diversity is a strength, and that government works best when it listens and delivers.
