Capping public transport at $30 a week

We’re making it cheaper to catch the train, tram, or bus, with public transport fares capped at $30 a week.
Labor’s fare cap will save regular commuters more than $1,400 a year, with concession fares capped at $15 a week.
Labor believes working people should be able to get ahead. But when you’re paying to catch public transport to work every day, those fares quickly add up.
A re-elected Labor Government will introduce the cap from 1 January 2027, when half-price fares are scheduled to end. It will run for two years.
Daily commuters will save $27 a week, almost half the usual cost of weekly fares. That’s more than $1,400 over a year that can go towards groceries, bills or the things your family needs.
Everyone using public transport can benefit. Concession holders will save too, with their weekly fares capped at $15.
Thanks to Labor, under-18s will continue to travel free, and seniors will keep their free weekend travel.
Knowing your weekly fares are capped will make it easier to plan the family budget, whether you’re catching the train to work, taking the bus to an appointment or heading out on the weekend.
Only Labor will deliver these savings, making everyday travel more affordable and helping working people keep more of what they earn.
