Secure, Local Jobs for Public School Cleaners

26 October 2026

A re-elected Carroll Labor Government will bring public school cleaning services in-house.

That means Victoria’s hardworking public school cleaners will get secure, stable jobs and students will get a cleaner, safer place to learn.

This builds on reforms Labor introduced in 2025 and follows feedback from schools and cleaners.

Cleaners will be employed directly by the Department of Education and will be part of the local school workforce.

Every school will have a detailed cleaning plan.

Every school will meet statewide quality standards.

Starting when current cleaning contracts expire at the end of 2027, a transition strategy will support existing jobs – with a phased implementation from Term 1, 2028.

This will progressively roll out to more than 1,600 public school campuses in 2028 and 2029.

Only a re-elected Labor Government will back school cleaners.

But a Liberal-One Nation Coalition Government and their $40 billion worth of cuts would put this all at risk.
