Labor Will Upgrade 50 Local Roads

29 October 2026

Labor is getting back to basics.

We're already fixing 500,000 potholes.

Now, a re-elected Carroll Labor Government will upgrade 50 local roads.

Upgrading 50 local roads across Victoria

Labor has already announced 25 local road upgrades in recent weeks, including delivering Bellarine Link, widening Somerton Rd, and duplicating Findon Rd, Taylors Rd and Hallam Rd.

Today, we’re announcing a new, $893 million plan to upgrade 25 more local roads.

19 of the 25 upgrades in our new plan are in regional Victoria.

In Ballarat, we’ll duplicate Ballarat-Carngham Road to four lanes, with a new roundabout, upgraded traffic lights and better walking and cycling paths.

In Kialla, we’ll build a new dual-lane roundabout at River Road and Goulburn Valley Highway to ease congestion and keep freight moving.

In Warragul, we’ll install new traffic lights at Howitt Street and Burke Street to reduce delays and improve traffic flow.

We’ll also deliver:

• Two intersection upgrades in Illowa

• New traffic lights at Hamilton Street in Broadford

• Extending John Street to intersect with Kilmore-Lancefield Road in Kilmore

• New turning lanes and upgraded traffic lights at Princes Hwy and Grey Street in Traralgon

• Strengthening the Traralgon-Maffra Road bridge

• An improved pedestrian crossing on McCartin Street in Leongatha

• Safety upgrades on Wangaratta-Whitfield Road, south of Wangaratta

• Widening and resealing eight roads across Western Victoria

These are local roads, bridges and intersections that regional Victorians use every day.

Planning and construction will start on all projects in the next term of a Carroll Labor Government.

The six remaining upgrades in the new package will be announced in the coming days.

Labor builds, Liberals don’t

Labor promised to remove 50 dangerous and congested level crossings.

We delivered all 50 – and another 46 on top of that.

Now we’ll upgrade 50 local roads.

Last time the Liberals were in power, nothing got built – and road maintenance funding got cut.

Now the Liberal-One Nation Coalition is promising $40 billion in cuts.

You can't cut $40 billion from the budget without cutting road maintenance.
