Labor Will Slash ED Wait Times by up to 20%

25 October 2026

Everyone deserves to get help fast in a hospital emergency department.

That’s why a re-elected Carroll Labor Government will slash ED wait times by:

• expanding 12 hospital emergency departments by 25 per cent
• hiring 1500 health workers – including 750 more nurses
• delivering 250 more beds – about the size of a hospital

All up, it will slash ED wait times by up to 20 per cent – and mean more than 210,000 patients get treated every year.

But under a Liberal-One Nation Government:

• $40 billion in cuts will devastate our health system
• nurses will be among 31,700 workers to get the sack, making wait times worse
• their plan to Americanise health care will turn EDs into transit lounges

Jeff Kennett closed 12 hospitals, Labor built 12 hospitals, and now we’ll expand 12 EDs.

Only Labor can stop Liberal-One Nation cuts that will Americanise our health system.

Labor’s Slash ED Wait Times Plan‍

Right now, Victorians are concerned about waiting too long in an ED to get treated.

The state average for ED wait times is 15 minutes, but EDs are facing record demand.

Some patients wait more than two hours.

Labor will expand 12 hospital EDs that can make the biggest difference to wait times:

• Alfred Hospital
• Austin Hospital
• Ballarat Base Hospital
• Bendigo Hospital
• Footscray Hospital
• Latrobe Regional Hospital
• Royal Children’s Hospital
• Shepparton Hospital
• Swan Hill Hospital
• Werribee Mercy Hospital
• Wonthaggi Hospital
• University Hospital Geelong

These 12 hospitals have an overall average wait time above the state average.

Labor’s plan will slash their average ED wait time by up to 20 per cent.

How Labor’s plan slashes wait times‍

Labor’s Slash ED Wait Times Plan expands 12 hospital EDs by:

• hiring 1500 health workers – including 750 more nurses
• delivering 250 more beds – about the size of a hospital

This expands each of the 12 hospital EDs by an average of 25 per cent, meaning:

• more than 210,000 patients can get treated every year
• wait times across their EDs are slashed by up to 20 per cent

It’s a $1.5 billion investment in public hospitals – ongoing, not a short-term fix.

Only Labor can stop Liberal-One Nation health cuts

Jeff Kennett’s Liberals closed 12 hospitals – Labor built 12 new hospitals.

The Liberals went to war with nurses – Labor hired 17,000 nurses.

Now Labor has a plan to cut wait times in 12 EDs.

The Liberal-One Nation Coalition will just cut EDs.

That’s what $40 billion in cuts and Americanising our health system will deliver.
