Labor Will Keep Waste to Energy Away From Homes
A re-elected Carroll Labor Government will introduce a 2-kilometre buffer between new waste-to-energy project boundaries and existing homes.
Waste to Energy has an important role to play in Victoria, but Labor will not build new facilities near family homes.
This will not apply to currently operating facilities.
The Legislative Council Economy and Infrastructure Committee tabled the Final Report of the Inquiry into “the development and expansion of waste-to-energy infrastructure in Victoria” in August.
The Committee delivered 59 findings and 33 recommendations and received over 600 submissions.
The Report noted a wide range of community concerns about the impact on their neighbourhoods.
It also made it clear that industry and expert views vary on the technology and systems required to best manage the impact on nearby communities.
It’s on this basis Labor will introduce this buffer.
A comprehensive government response to the report will be delivered in 2027.
Jess Wilson's Liberal-One Nation Coalition has no plans to create new industries and jobs, only plans to cut $40 billion from the services Victorian rely on.
Quote attributable to Premier Ben Carroll
“Waste to Energy has a place in Victoria, but not near family homes – that’s why Labor will put a buffer zone in.”
