Labor Will Hire 500 More Graduate Nurses and Midwives

26 October 2026

Nurses and midwives make our public hospitals tick and Labor backs them 100 per cent.

Liberals went to war with nurses and midwives, but Labor hired 17,000 more of them.

Now a re-elected Carroll Labor Government will hire an extra 500 graduate nurses and midwives.

It’s all about building the workforce for the future – and caring for patients right now.

Labor will also train nurses to prescribe medication, making it easier for patients.

More grad nurses

Labor will hire 500 graduate nurses and midwives to improve care and build the nursing workforce.

Our boost will subsidise 300 graduate nurse and midwifery places in health services across Victoria.

That’s a $132 million investment over four years – not a short-term fix.

Labor will also hire 200 grad nurses as part of our Slash ED Wait Times Plan and additional health commitments.

Labor’s Slash ED Wait Times Plan will hire 1500 health workers in total – including 750 nurses – and fund more beds to slash ED wait lists at 12 hospitals.

More nurse prescribers

Once you’ve been discharged, you just want to get back home – not wait around for a doctor to prescribe medication.

Labor changed the law so designated registered nurses (RNs) can prescribe, too.

Now, a $1.7 million investment over four years will fund 200 training scholarships, so nurses can get qualified and can get on with prescribing.

They’ll work across the state improving patient flow and getting patients home faster.

Only Labor can stop Liberal-One Nation health cuts

The Liberals went to war with nurses and midwives – Labor has hired 17,000 more of them.

And under a Jess Wilson Liberal-One Nation Coalition government:

• they’ll sack 31,700 frontline workers, including nurses and midwives

• they’ll abolish the Department of Health

• they’ll turn EDs into airport lounges

It’s a plan to Americanise health care, and it’s the real risk at this election.

The last Liberal Government had a plan to replace nurses with lower paid “assistants”.

This Labor Government delivered nurses and midwives a 28.4 per cent pay rise.

Only Labor will protect our public health system and the nurses that care for us all.
