Labor Will Cap Public Transport Fares at $30 A Week

19 October 2026

When you're paying for the train five days a week, the cost adds up.

That’s why Labor will cap public transport fares at $30 a week.

Labor’s $30 fare cap saves regular commuters more than $1,400 a year.

It will start Jan 1 when half-price fares are scheduled to end – and run for two years.

And it’s on top of our plan to cap tolls at $30 a week. That means:

  • Car, ute or van
  • Train, tram or bus
  • $30 a week – only under Labor

Who is eligible‍

Everyone who uses public transport can benefit from Labor’s $30 fare cap.

But full-time workers who use public transport every day will benefit most.

They will save $27 a week – almost half the usual price of weekly fares.

Concession holders save, too – their fares will be capped at $15 a week.

Existing benefits like free weekend travel for seniors will stay in place.

And kids are still free, forever.

How much you’ll save‍

Under Labor’s $30 fare cap, daily commuters like full-time workers save $27 a week.

That’s around half the usual price of weekly fares.

And it works out to a saving of more than $1,400 a year.

Picture a family where one parent drives to work daily using toll roads, another parent commutes daily on the train, and two kids catch the bus to school.

With Labor's $30 caps – plus free PT for kids – this family is $8,000 better off.

And that’s before they step foot in one of Labor’s 10 free dental clinics.

How we’ll pay for it‍

This two-year cost-of-living commitment will cost $206 million.

A measure like this isn’t sustainable long-term – but it’s needed in the short-term.

We can afford it because we’ve made commonsense decisions to reduce spending.

How we’ll help you save further‍

Free PT for kids is saving parents thousands.

For people who have to drive, we’ll cap tolls at $30 a week for 2027.

You can save up to $5,000.

The Liberal-One Nation Coalition can’t promise to help you save, because all they’re offering is $40 billion in cuts.

And you can’t cut $40 billion without cutting health care and cost-of-living help.
